Hot Springs National Park is located 60 miles southwest of Maumelle. State parks in the area include: Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Toltec Mounds State Park, Lake Catherine State Park (50 miles south of Little Rock), Lake Degray State Park (50 miles southwest of Little Rock), Lake Ouachita State Park, Petit Jean State Park, and Woolly Hollow State Park (50 miles north of Little Rock). The Jesse Odom Community Center is Maumelle’s newly renovated recreation complex. It features a double gymnasium, and a health club with cardio and weight rooms. Maumelle Diamond Center is the location of the Maumelle Sports Association and Maumelle Adult Softball, while the Rolling Oaks Soccer Complex is home to the Maumelle Soccer Club. Also available to residents is the Dowell Naylor Aquatic Center, which boasts a diving board, 2 slides, and water sports. When you visit the Maumelle Country Club you can take advantage of their stunning, private 18-hole championship golf course or perhaps enjoy the swimming pool, the tennis courts, the pro shop, or the clubhouse. The Country Club of Arkansas residential development includes a beautiful semi-private18-hole golf course. The Country Club boasts a clubhouse, a pro shop, an athletic club, an indoor/outdoor pool, as well as volleyball and tennis courts. The greens are carefully manicured with both wide and narrow fairways. The Plantation Golf Club is another semi-private 18-hole course, which is situated on the bank of the Arkansas River and offers challenges as well as scenic views of Pinnacle Mountain. Special Attractions/Events The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra features well-known Classical and Pops artists. The Arkansas Arts Center offers exhibits including paintings, sculpture, and photography. It also stages theatrical productions in the "Children's Little Theatre." The Little Rock Zoo, one of the nation’s best, is home to over 500 different species. You can celebrate all year long in the Maumelle area. Little Rock has the Arkansas State Fair, Riverfest, the Arkansas Literary Festival, Blues on the River, Oktoberfest, the Bluegrass Spring Festival, the Fall Bluegrass Festival, the Territorial Fair, and World Fest, to name of few. Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places In 1812, a group of settlers from Alabama arrived in Maumelle. The brothers, Jacob and James Pyeatt, who settled an area that is now a part of the Maumelle Country Club golf course, led them. This settlement became known as Pyeattstown. Jacob Pyeatt operated a ferry on the Arkansas River and James Pyeatt was a farmer. By 1819, the settlement had grown to a population of 150. Farmers settled in the Maumelle area in the mid to late1800's, and Maumelle continued as farmland until 1941. At this point, the United States Government purchased it from the individual landowners for a munition manufacturing and storage facility. In the early 1970’s, Maumelle was one of the nation’s thirteen "New Towns" and by the spring of 1974, the town's infrastructure was in place and the first family moved in. The community was named for Maumelle Mountain, which was named for French term for "breast. Situated in nearby North Little Rock is the Old Mill Park, which is an authentic re-creation of an 1800's gristmill. The Old Mill is featured in the opening scene of the film "Gone with the Wind."
